U-Haul Growth Index
U-Haul is a leading authority on North American migration trends. Its network spans all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. More than 24,000 rental locations provide unmatched insight into where people are moving. While rankings do not directly reflect population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index effectively measures how well states, metropolitan regions, and cities attract and retain residents.
Metro Phoenix ranked as the No. 5 leading U.S. region in growth, down from third in 2024. Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin were 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Metro Charlotte ranked as the fourth leading region.
Arizona fell one spot to seventh from its No. 6 growth ranking in 2024. The state has now ranked among the top 10 for net one-way U-Haul customer gains for six straight years. California came in last in growth rank, one spot behind Illinois. Texas and Florida lead the list for 2025.
