History

The city of Apache Junction, named for the junction of the Apache Trail and Old West Highway, was incorporated on November 24, 1978. With its origins deeply intertwined with the lore of the American West, Apache Junction has a storied past dating back to the late 1800s. Initially established as a stagecoach stop and mining camp, the city flourished during the gold rush era, drawing a colorful array of fortune-seekers to the Superstition Mountains. Today, Apache Junction preserves this heritage through a range of attractions and events that celebrate the area’s vibrant history. Goldfield Ghost Town, meticulously reconstructed to transport visitors to the 1890s, offers a nostalgic trip back in time. City Government

Apache Junction operates under a “Council-Manager” system of government. The City Manager is appointed by the City Council. The Council, comprising seven members elected at-large on a non-partisan basis, includes the Mayor and six Councilmembers. This electoral structure ensures accountability to the entire citizenry, with residents directly electing their representatives.

US Route 60 (Superstition Freeway): Primary east-west freeway serving Apache Junction. It connects the city to the eastern parts of Metro Phoenix, including Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix.

AZ State Route 88 (Apache Trail): Scenic north-south highway that connects Apache Junction to nearby attractions like the Superstition Mountains, Lost Dutchman State Park, and Canyon Lake.

Idaho Road: Primary north-south arterial road running through Apache Junction, connecting the city’s residential areas to US 60 and SR 88, providing local access to schools, retail areas, and businesses.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport: Commercial flights and cargo operations with close proximity to Apache Junction. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport connects the East Valley to various domestic and international destinations, offering an alternative to Phoenix Sky Harbor.
