PHOENIX — Valley-based Harkins Theatres has opened its family entertainment concept known as Harkins BackLot in north Phoenix.
The concept from the chain combines movies, food and beverages, bowling, sports viewing, arcade games and more. Its name takes inspiration from Hollywood backlots where movies are made.
“For more than 90 years, Harkins has been dedicated to creating exceptional entertainment experiences,” Harkins President and CEO Mike Bowers said in a release.
“With Harkins BackLot, we are expanding that commitment beyond the auditorium to deliver an unrivaled social entertainment destination where guests can celebrate, play and enjoy unforgettable moments with friends and the whole family.”
What makes Harkins BackLot unique from other Harkins locations?
The new concept touts the state’s largest cinema-sized sports screen. Known as BackLot Arena, it uses recent technology for laser image projection.
The sports bar themes continue with over 60 screens throughout the venue and elevated takes on sports bar favorites. Dishes include the Ahi Tuna Stack, BackLot Philly Cheesesteak and Hangover Burger, with dessert options such as an Overloaded Milkshake or Warm S’mores Skillet Brownie.
An outdoor dining patio is available, as well as indoor and outdoor bar services. Selections include traditional drinks, local brews, select wines and hand-crafted cocktails and mocktails with some surprises.
Gaming options start with the 12 bowling lanes from Spark Bowling, which is known for using augmented reality technology. There are private lanes available for special events.
In addition to its arcade floor that includes VR experiences with prizes, the concept also offers Krazy Darts, which brings an animated visual component on a large screen to the traditional game.
BackLot also offers space for corporate events and parties.
The entertainment center is within The Shops at Norterra its home off of Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road.
Discounts on games and food are offered for guests who arrive in July.
“Bringing people together through entertainment has always been at the heart of what we do,” owner Dan Harkins said. “We’re excited to continue that tradition with Harkins BackLot.”
