Cyclospora Outbreak and Rising Costs

Salad and Go filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday and announced it will permanently close all of its locations, serving its final meals Wednesday. The Gilbert-founded drive-thru restaurant chain submitted voluntary bankruptcy petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas in Houston.

The company said declining consumer demand, rapid expansion challenges, and rising operating costs made its business unsustainable. Salad and Go also said a July Cyclospora foodborne illness outbreak hurt sales, even though health officials did not link the chain to the contamination.

Drive-thru chain Salad and Go filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday and announced it will permanently shut down every one of its locations, with the last meals served Wednesday.

The Phoenix-based company filed voluntary petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division.

The fast-food concept had expanded across multiple states since its founding in Gilbert in 2013.

The company blamed sustained pressure on consumer demand, past strategic growth challenges and rising costs.

A July outbreak of Cyclospora, a foodborne parasite, further damaged business even though Salad and Go was not linked to the contamination, the company said.

“This is a painful day for everyone who built, worked for and loved Salad and Go,” CEO Mike Tattersfield said in a statement. “Our mission was brought to life every day by an extraordinary team and embraced by guests who made us part of their routines. We are proud of what we built together and grateful to every team member, guest and partner who believed in it.”
